Lily Hu is a philosopher at Yale University. She holds a PhD in applied mathematics and philosophy from Harvard, and her work is on causal inference, race, and how we move from data to claims about the social world. This summer she wrote “Un-Doing Philosophy” for Berlin Review, an essay about why she refuses to use AI in her philosophy and her teaching.
In this conversation, Lily and Tobias Haberkorn talk about what happens when you ban AI from a philosophy course, why AI is so good at the “bread and butter” skills of philosophy and so bad for the people who use it, and the split between philosophers who embrace it and those who refuse.
